Having been a computer nut since age four, I happily wrote down computer science on the line of my application indicating my intended major. I was reaching for the top what better place to study computing than MIT? And so it went. I got in and my dream of being some eminent CS guy was on its way. Strengthening my plan was the fact that MIT has one of the nations top undergrad business schools, and I could even double major in both computer science and business. What a winning combination! Sounds like the perfect training for the next big Internet startup, right? Thats when I learned about MITs department of civil engineering, home to some interesting and important transportation research. Visions of shaping new developments in the worlds train networks were starting to look pretty appealing. And besides, I wanted to keep computing as a hobby, right? Didnt want to study it to death, else I might start looking at it as a job so out went Course 6 and in went Course 1. I really couldnt think of anything else I wanted to study. Transportation just looked so interesting. And thats not to say it doesnt now. Im just still keeping my mind open. Its kinda weird, I mean sometime during last calendar year, my passion for exploring the far-reaching ends of the computer went dormant, replaced by a new enthusiasm for travel. I had built this support structure, this foundation on which my life ran, of computers and servers and networks and programming, and while the knowledge or expertise didnt vanish, the interest of pursuing it seemed to. Ill leave you with a few pictures (you can see more on Dheeras website) In my transportation seminar, we were asked to identify travel options, routes and fares for the Boston-Washington corridor during a specified date period, select the best option, defend our choices, and estimate how many people per day we thought utilized each mode of transport. In a conventional gas or electric oven, infrared waves pour off the hot elements or burners and are converted to heat when they strike air inside and the food. Microwaves and infrared rays are related in that both are forms of electromagnetic energy. Both consist of electric and magnetic fields that rise and fall like waves on an ocean. Silently, invisibly and at the speed of light, they travel through space and matter. There are many forms of electromagnetic energy (see diagram). Ordinary light from the sun is one, and the only one you can actually see. X-rays are another. Each kind, moving at a separate wavelength, has a unique effect on any matter it touches. When you lie out in the summer sun, for example, it's the infrared rays that bring warmth, but ultraviolet radiation that tans your skin. If the Earth's protective atmosphere weren't there, intense cosmic radiation from space would kill you. So why do microwaves cook faster than infrared rays? Well, suppose you're roasting a chicken in a radar range. What happens is that when you switch on the microwaves, they're absorbed only by water molecules in the chicken. Water is what chemists call a polar molecule. It has a slightly positive charge at one end and a slightly negative charge at the opposite end. This peculiar orientation provides a sort of handle for the microwaves to grab onto. The microwaves agitate the water molecules billions of times a second, and this rapid movement generates heat and cooks the food. Since microwaves agitate only water molecules, they pass through all other molecules and penetrate deep into the chicken. They reach right inside the food. Ordinary ovens, by contrast, fail to have the same penetrating power because their infrared waves agitate all molecules. Most of the infarred radiation is spent heating the air inside the oven, and any remaining rays are absorbed by the outer layer of the chicken. Majority rule and power essays When looking at the writings of Martin Luther King Jr. in, A Letter From a Birmingham Jail and Henry David Thoreau in Civil Disobedience, one finds that each man takes a somewhat different approach to delivering a message, but the messages are in fact similar, as both call for a drastic change to majority rule. Both men share the desire for universal justice and they feel majority rule prevents this, as too small of a number of individuals can make unjust laws that affect a large portion of the population. Majority and minority are two terms that King and Thoreau use in their writing's, but their definition of each differs slightly. King sees himself as a part of a minority in the fact that, him being black prevents him from having equal rights under the laws of the United States of America. Thoreau sees himself as a minority because he does not have a say as to the actions of the United States government that is suppose to represent him and he is supposed to support. Both men call for action and use themselves as a model for how to take action. The motive for both Thoreau's and King's writing is based on race and how the United States government does not represent all of its' citizens. The issue of race is more at the forefront of King's writing, while proper (or improper) representation by the government is more of the issue that Thoreau looks at, with race as a key point. One of the few significant differences in both men's attempt to persuade the citizen's of the United States that their government does represent all men, is the level at which each protest. King's protest is grander in the form a large march, while Thoreau prefers to do his protesting on an individual level by not adhering to an unjust law and refusing to pay his taxes. Ancient Definitions of Rhetoric Broadly defined in our own time as the art of effective communication, the rhetoric studied in ancient Greece and Rome (from roughly the fifth century B.C. to the early Middle Ages) was primarily intended to help citizens plead their claims in court. Though the early teachers of rhetoric, known as Sophists, were criticized by Plato and other philosophers, the study of rhetoric soon became the cornerstone of classical education. Modern theories of oral and written communication remain heavily influenced by the basic rhetorical principles introduced in ancient Greece by Isocrates and Aristotle, and in Rome by Cicero and Quintilian. Here, well briefly introduce these key figures and identify some of their central ideas. Rhetoric in Ancient Greece The English word rhetoric is derived from Greek rhetorike, which apparently came into use in the circle of Socrates in the fifth century and first appears in Platos dialogue Gorgias, probably written about 385 B.C. . . .. Rhetorike in Greek specifically denotes the civic art of public speaking as it developed in deliberative assemblies, law courts, and other formal occasions under constitutional government in the Greek cities, especially the Athenian democracy. As such, it is a cultural subset of a more general concept of the power of words and their potential to affect a situation in which they are used or received.(George A. Kennedy, A New History of Classical Rhetoric, 1994) Plato (c.428-c.348 B.C.): Flattery and Cookery A pupil (or at least an associate) of the great Athenian philosopher Socrates, Plato expressed his disdain for false rhetoric in Gorgias, an early work. In a much later work, Phaedrus, he developed a philosophical rhetoric, one that called for studying the souls of human beings to discover truth. [Rhetoric] seems to me then . . . to be a pursuit that is not a matter of art, but showing a shrewd, gallant spirit which has a natural bent for clever dealing with mankind, and I sum up its substance in the name flattery. . . . Well now, you have heard what I state rhetoric to bethe counterpart of cookery in the soul, acting here as that does on the body. (Plato, Gorgias, c. 385 B.C., translated by W.R.M. Lamb) Since the function of oratory is in fact to influence men’s souls, the intending orator must know what types of soul there are. Now these are of a determinate number, and their variety results in a variety of individuals. To the types of soul thus discriminated there corresponds a determinate number of types of discourse. Hence a certain type of hearer will be easy to persuade by a certain type of speech to take such and such action for such and such reason, while another type will be hard to persuade. All this the orator must fully understand, and next he must watch it actually occurring, exemplified in men’s conduct, and must cultivate a keen perception in following it, if he is going to get any advantage out of the previous instruction that he was given in the school. Hackforth) Isocrates (436-338 B.C.): With Love of Wisdom and Honor A contemporary of Plato and founder of the first school of rhetoric in Athens, Isocrates viewed rhetoric as a powerful tool for investigating practical problems. When anyone elects to speak or write discourses which are worthy of praise and honor, it is not conceivable that such a person will support causes which are unjust or petty or devoted to private quarrels, and not rather those which are great and honorable, devoted to the welfare of humanity and the common good. It follows, then, that the power to speak well and think right will reward the person who approaches the art of discourse with love of wisdom and love of honor. (Isocrates, Antidosis, 353 B.C., translated by George Norlin) Aristotle (384-322 B.C.): The Available Means of Persuasion Platos most famous student, Aristotle, was the first to develop a complete theory of rhetoric. In his lecture notes (known to us as the Rhetoric), Aristotle developed principles of argumentation that remain extremely influential today. As W.D. Ross observed in his introduction to The Works of Aristotle (1939), The Rhetoric may seem at first sight to be a curious jumble of literary criticism with second-rate logic, ethics, politics, and jurisprudence, mixed by the cunning of one who well knows how the weaknesses of the human heart are to be played upon. In understanding the book it is essential to bear in mind its purely practical purpose. It is not a theoretical work on any of these subjects; it is a manual for the speaker . . .. Much of what [Aristotle] says applies only to the conditions of Greek society, but very much is permanently true. Let rhetoric [be defined as] an ability, in each [particular] case, to see the available means of persuasion. This is the function of no other art; for each of the others is instructive and persuasive about its own subject. (Aristotle, On Rhetoric, late 4th century B.C.; translated by George A. Kennedy, 1991) Cicero (106-43 B.C.): To Prove, to Please, and to Persuade A member of the Roman Senate, Cicero was the most influential practitioner and theorist of ancient rhetoric who ever lived. In  De Oratore  (Orator), Cicero examined the qualities of what he perceived to be the ideal  orator. There is a scientific system of politics which includes many important departments. One of these departmentsa large and important oneis eloquence based on the rules of art, which they call rhetoric. For I do not agree with those who think that political science has no need for eloquence, and I violently disagree with those who think that it is wholly comprehended in the power and skill of the rhetorician. Therefore we will classify oratorical ability as a part of political science. The function of eloquence seems to be to speak in a manner suited to persuade an audience, the end is to persuade by speech. (Marcus Tullius Cicero,  De Inventione, 55 B.C., translated by H. M. Hubbell) The man of eloquence whom we seek, following the suggestion of Antonius, will be one who is able to speak in court or in deliberative bodies so as to prove, to please, and to sway or persuade. For, after all, the foundation of eloquence, as of everything else, is wisdom. In an oration, as in life, nothing is harder than to determine what is appropriate. Hubbell) Quintilian (c.35-c.100): The Good Man Speaking Well A great Roman rhetorician, Quintilians reputation rests on  Institutio Oratoria  (Institutes of Oratory), a compendium of the best of ancient rhetorical theory. For my part, I have undertaken the task of molding the ideal orator, and as my first desire is that he should be a good man, I will return to those who have sounder opinions on the subject. . . . The definition which best suits its real character is that which makes rhetoric the  science of speaking well. For this definition includes all the virtues of oratory and the character of the orator as well, since no man can speak well who is not good himself. Many credit U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson with spurring interest in the environmental movement, he created Earth Day in the spring of 1970 which led to the creation of the EPA in December of that year. The EPA monitors a huge array of environmental issues in America. The agency scrutinizes everything from the fuel standards to mercury levels in lakes and landfill regulations. Natural resource programs were established in Texas at the turn of the 20th century, motivated initially by concerns over the management of water resources and water rights. In parallel with developments in the rest of the nation, and at the federal level, state natural-resource efforts broadened at mid-century to include the protection of air and water resources, and later to the regulation of generating hazardous and non-hazardous waste. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality strives to protect our states public health and natural resources consistent with sustainable economic development. Their goal is clean air, clean water, and the safe management of waste. TCEQ for short, essentially is Texass version of the EPA. Texas has had a rough relationship with the Environmental Protection Agency. Texas legislators and business owners have refused EPA monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and air permit requirements in the state. Reasons for this vary and include claims of states rights and rejection of EPA rulings on the dangers of six greenhouse gases. In May 2011, the Texas House passed a measure asking federal legislators to prevent the EPA from regulating emissions in the state under the Clean Air Act. The state lost similar legal battles in 2010 and 2011. The state has spent approximately $1.4 million on the cases so far, chiefly centered on air quality and climate issues that it says are intended to protect public health. The EPA has five main goals: Addressing climate change and improving air quality, Protecting Americas waters, cleaning up communities and advancing sustainable development, ensuring the safety of chemicals and preventing pollution, and protecting human health and the environment by enforcing laws and assuring compliance. Air pollution, one of the EPAs main concerns, comes from many different sources: stationary sources such as factories, power plants, and smelters and smaller sources such as dry cleaners and degreasing operations; mobile sources such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains; and naturally occurring sources such as windblown dust, and volcanic eruptions, all contribute to air pollution. The Clean Air Act establishes a number of permitting programs designed to carry out the goals of the act. Some of these programs are directly implemented by EPAs South Central Region also known as Region 6, but most are carried out by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Air Quality can be affected in many ways by the pollution emitted from these sources. These pollution sources can also emit a wide variety of pollutants. The number one air pollutant is Carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide or CO is a colorless, odorless gas formed by the incomplete reaction of air with fuel. CO pollution occurs primarily from emissions produced by fossil fuel powered engines, including motor vehicles and non-road engines and vehicles. Higher levels of CO generally occur in areas with heavy traffic congestion. Other sources of CO emissions include industrial processes, residential wood burning, and natural sources such as forest fires. Oil and gas facilities in Texas released more than 20 million pounds of illegal sulfur dioxide emissions, which contribute to smog and acidification of water and soil, during breakdowns and maintenance activities in 2014 and 68 million pounds in 2015. The states enforcement of air pollution limits in permits has been poor. When Texas does impose penalties for violations, the fines are often small in comparison to the cost to public health and the profits generated by the industry. Another main pollution concern is water. Texas is the second-biggest water polluter in the country, in terms of pounds released. But when the toxicity of the pollution is factored in, Texas jumps to the top of the list. The top overall water polluter in Texas was the Pilgrims Pride chicken-processing plant in Mount Pleasant, which in 2012 dumped 2.8 million pounds of toxic chemicals into the Tankersley River in Northeast Texas. Working on these issues in Texas isnt easy, with powerful polluter lobbies that are used to getting what they want from state legislators and regulators. The only feasible way to promote solutions to the government and win is by forming an organization. Starting small and then expanding by getting more and more concerned citizens involved would go a long way. The organization would have to build traction and earn its place amongst the large companies and government agencies. The citizens, once organized into a force could boycott companies not in compliance wi th EPA or the communitys standards, sue large corporations for any number of shortcomings, and in short make change happen. The people hold more power together than they ever do individually and it will take cooperation on an extraordinary scale for such an idea to exist. There are five main U.S. environmental laws. These include the Clean Air Act which divides the country into air quality regions and sets goals for the concentration of various pollutants in the air. After that is the Clean Water Act, its goals are to eliminate discharge of all pollutants and to restore and maintain the quality of the nations waters so they are fishable and swimmable. Another is the Safe Drinking Water Act which is in place to ensure water is consumable and looks clean. The SDWA also protects the quality of underground water sources. Next comes the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act which manages the generation, storage, transport, treatment and disposal of solid and hazardous wastes from operating facilities, and minimize waste disposal to land. Finally, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act covers the clean-up of abandoned hazardous waste sites and spills, and provides for community right-to-know of industrial waste management practices. Texas is usually going head to head with the Environmental Protection Agency arguing over a regulation of some manner. The EPA usually is the winner in these arguments from limits on greenhouse gas emissions to restrictions on air pollution that crosses state lines. During the Obama administration Texas, has sued the EPA and the federal government more than 50 times over environmental concerns. These lawsuits seem petty and wasteful of tax payers money to some. While others are glad that Texas is still up for sticking it to big government and making sure that they are not over reaching on boundaries trying to use powers that congress has not given them. Texas is continuously in court with the EPA because the EPA is encroaching on Texass management of air quality standards. The EPA is only doing so because Texas is doing the bare minimum to reduce pollution. It is doing what is required within the regulations so that it remains in compliance with the acts. However, it is still so litt le that then the EPA has to try and force Texas to do more than just the bare minimum and that invokes a lawsuit because they do not have jurisdiction to do such a thing. It is asinine and a poor representation of what our state government is capable of but with all of the major corporations backing the state Texas will continue in this manner. Congress would need to amend the acts to give the EPA more power in the matter. This however, is unlikely because that would-be encroachment on states rights. The fact of the matter is the Texas Government does not want to do it so therefore it will do everything in its power not to. Unless a major power switch were to occur or perhaps a major push via the citizens of Texas this charade will continue. It all amounts to unnecessary spending just to allow big business freedom to do as it wishes at the cost of the populations health and in increase in their wallet size. Texas would much rather figure out its environmental issues on its own. A state set in its ways, it is not about to let the federal government have compete dictation over any of its policies. Beneficial or not Texas will conduct itself as it sees fit. Interference or forced control will meet opposition immediately at no consideration of expense. The wins Texas has acquired against the federal government has made it proud even though the losses fairly outweigh them. The baroque movement was a movement that aimed to elevate the church and its teachings, at least at first. It began around 1600 when the Vatican decided to try to make Rome into the greatest city in the world in order to edify God and the church. Another aim was to combat the spread of Protestantism, which had begun to flourish in parts of Europe after Martin Luther staged his first protests of the Catholic church. There was a consistent theme of all things dramatic throughout this period. They sought to appeal to people’s senses and emotions in displaying and painting scenes with a highly dramatic flair. In addition, they also sought to edify the church and state by building things in a bigger scale than ever before. One can see this in the palaces and cathedrals built during this time. So, in short, artists and architects not only painted dramatically, but also built dramatically until the end of this period around 1700. One of the most prominent artists of this period and also of all time is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Rembrandt was born in Leiden, Netherlands in 1606. After attending elementary school for a short time, he went to study at the Latin School in Leiden, but it is unclear whether he finished or not. Jackie’s initial focus is very much related to the film’s plot. As the plot develops, Jackie finds herself in the center of a situation where a guns sells man (Ordell) refuses to let Jackie run her mouth to the authorities, while the authorities already know all about Ordell’s business and simply want a name from Jackie due to the fact they have been unable to arrest Ordell due to his unknown identity. Jackie’s Trouble From The Start From the start the audience is made aware that Jackie had it in with Ordell the first time she is confronted by two detectives, Nicolet and Dargus. They take her in for questioning like normal, already having some knowledge of Ordell, but all they want from Jackie is a name. The camera itself emphasizes the scene with an array of close-ups of Jackie and the two detectives as they carry on this conversation in this first scene. The two parties, Jackie and the detectives, are battling back and forth; Jackie resisting their every attempt to seize information from her. This unfortunate meeting leads Jackie to meet a fellow named Max, who assists her in her real goal: getting Ordell’s fortune. But for now she is happy to get the detectives off her back and on to her next problem: Ordell. The time finally arrives and one evening after a meeting with Max Jackie comes into a confrontation with Ordell. Like stated earlier, Jackie is no fool and picked up a pistol from Max, if my suspicion’s correct, in case the conversation between her and Ordell became a little heated. In the confrontation the lights are off and the audience is not able to see a single thing; but the conversation between the two continues loud and clear. Jackie’s Power Jackie’s first show of power is shown in the scene where Ordell comes to â€Å"visit. Jackie had caught on that Ordell was the one who murdered Beaumont so she steals a pistol from Max. Above, a closeup is shown of Max just realizing his pistol had been taken. It is confirmed he knew it was Jackie at the time as he shows up knocking on her door the next day. This screen shot shows the true power of Jackie, that she is will ing to do anything to get what she wants. In the split image, Jackie is seen in the darkness with Ordell’s hand around her throat. At that moment she presses a gun steadily against Ordell’s penis, as he says â€Å"It feels like a gun pressed against my dick. Later in the scene Jackie essentially interrogates Ordell, with a gun pointed to his face the entire time. The image above displays the transition of power between Jackie and Ordell, in this case Jackie stripping Ordell of his. Jackie continues to keep the gun pointed to Ordell as she, by change of plan, questions him instead. As it plays out, Ordell is now the one with a gun pointed to his dome and his hands up high in defense. Jackie astonishingly creates a turn of events from this scene alone; she essentially takes the authority from Ordell and places it in her own hands to aid in her own plot: getting Ordell’s money. Jackie’s methods of achieving this, however were the most cunning and sneaky among the best. Jackie really lures Ordell into a trap and uses the element of surprise to sneak the gun on him; at the time speaking with a soft voice, alleviating Ordell of all his suspicion so that he would come close to Jackie thinking she wasn’t a threat; as it is shown he was terribly mistaken! As shown in the image above, Jackie sits with her feet facing away from Ordell and closed, with the gun in her hand, resting on her knees and the gun pointed straight ahead at Ordell. In conclusion, Jackie’s persona is demonstrated very well in the character. Jackie really does serve as an example of a hard working black woman who’s just trying to live comfortably in society. Furthermore, the film itself really helps the audience notice these facts, with its use of closeups and panning during eventful scenes in the film. Regarding this one select scene as the most important, the movie itself shows a transition of power and authority from the main characters who first held the authority like Ordell and Lewis for example, to characters like Jackie who hold the power up towards the end. Even the biggest organizations in the world have incurred losses at one time or another .A number of factors can make an organization to incur losses including economic changes in a country, inefficient operation processes that lead to high levels of wastage and over employment in an organization, which occurs when the number of employees exceed the amount of work available. This is likely to hike the wage bill for the organization beyond manageable levels. It can also be as a result of unnecessary spending on employees motivation packages (Williams, 2011). There are number of strategies that such organizations can result to, inorder to reverse this trend. Downsizing and restructuring are among these strategies. The Indian In The Cupboard The Indian in the Cupboard For this months book report I read a book called The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks. This book was about a boy named Omri and his small Indian toy. For Omris birthday he received a small Indian toy from a friend and a small cupboard from his brother. Omri put his Indian in the cupboard and to his surprise when he opened the cupboard the Indian toy had come to life. Omri has to keep his Indian a secret for fear of an adult finding out. When Omri told his friend Patrick about the toy, Patrick wanted his own. Omri thought it was a bad idea but brought the toy to life anyway. When Omri brought Patricks cowboy toy to life, Patrick was very excited, but Omri was afraid he didnt know that they were real people. Omri decided he would keep them both at his house. Patrick did not like this idea but agreed only if Omri would bring the cowboy and Indian to school the next day. Then all the trouble started. Patrick and Omri were called into the headmasters office and the headmaster threatened to call Patricks father if he didnt tell him what was going on. Patrick was so afraid that he showed the headmaster the Indian and the other toy. Luckily the headmaster thought he was seeing things and so he went home. Omri decided that the Indian was too much trouble and that he should put them into plastic again. So Omri locked the Indian into the cupboard and when he opened it again, the toy was plastic again. I thought this book had a very nice plot. The book was very interesting and exciting due to the fictitious plot. I think that a story about something that could never happen in real life always is more interesting and attracts more readers. The author described things well in this book, but this book was a bit easy to read because she didnt use difficult words. This sometimes would not allow for you to know exactly how she meant for things to appear. The setting of this story is in modern day England. The book did not really describe what time period it was supposed to be, but it seemed relatively modern. I think the book was set in a moderately sized town, because Omri walked to school everyday, and if it were a big city this would be an impossible task for a young boy. The setting wasnt very important to the book because most of the story was about people and not necessarily their environment. There were many characters in this book. The main character in this book was Omri. Omri was a normal young boy who was interested in playing cowboys and Indians, and other games like that. His friend, Patrick, was interested in the same things, but Patrick wasnt as nice and he was a bit bossy and pushy. He forced Omri into making a live toy for him. Omri had a brother named Adiel. Adiel didnt like Omri that much and one time in the story he hid Omris cupboard because he thought Omri had taken his football shorts. Another character in this book was the headmaster. The headmaster was a very strict person, but he wasnt unkind. The author didnt describe the characters well enough, which made it hard to understand the characters personality, but I think that you could assume what a character was like by the way they were acting. I could relate to how Omri felt when he had his friend pressuring him into doing something he didnt want to do. The author described the characters feelings very well. I think that the main conflict in this book was Omri trying to keep this Indian a secret. I think this because during the book it was always Omris main goal; it was one reason why Omri didnt want to make a live toy for Patrick. In the end, Omri kept the Indian a secret, but he ended up giving up because he locked the Indian back in the cupboard and made him plastic again. This was a good book, but it wouldve been

This is because as the water shallows the emergent vegetation can now break the surface and take over from the submergents. However as more and more silt is trapped in the rooted emergents and as they decay the water level decreases still further and marshland plants should be able to establish themselves. Planning To collect data from the pond we decided to have 15 data collection points along a 50m transect at 3.5m intervals. I chose a grided quadrat held at arms length facing away from the bank to collect values for percentage cover of emergent, submergent and marsh plant cover at each point. The quadrat had 100 squares and thus I was able to count how many full squares there were to record percentage readings. The depth I measured at arms length with a depth pole to the nearest cm. By taking points on a transect I was using a systematic sampling technique. I spent 1hour collecting the data. Risk Assessment When collecting data I was careful to step on firm ground and tried to keep off the edge of the bank and a dry sunny day was chosen to reduce the risk of falling into the pond. Accuracy and Reliability of the Data The depth was taken to the nearest cm of the depth pole and I held it at arms length from the bank for each measurement. The quadrat was held at waist height and at arms length for each measurement, however it was sometimes difficult to accurately count the number of full squares covered by a plant type. Proving Hypotheses: To prove hypothesis 3 I used spearmans rank correlation coefficient to show that there was a direct link between the depth of water decreasing and the number of emergent plants. The correlation coefficient can then be put in to a graph to give a significance level of similarity between the two factors. (see working) The significance level came out to 1% so there is definitely a strong correlation. The similarity can also be seen clearly on graph 3 where the submergents decrease rapidly after an anomalous bare ground reading at the first transect. This anomaly may have been caused by the submergent plants at this point being covered by soil falling in from the bank leaving very few plants to be seen here. A further anomaly can be seen on the percentage of total plant cover (graph 5). There appears to be very few plants at point 8, this in fact was a mud strip used as a walkway to the centre of the pond and thus plants had not taken root here. I also used spearmans rank to prove hypothesis 1 to show a direct link between depth of water decreasing with distance around the pond. The significance level came out at 1% so there is also a strong correlation. The general trend can also be seen on graph 1 where the trend line clearly shows a gradual decrease in depth with distance along the transect. This indeed should be the case because the further around the transect one goes more succession will have taken place. The pioneer species will have been succeeded by more advanced plant through autogenic succession. The submergent plants, grow up and decay year after year, gradually decreasing the depth and changing the substrate until rooted emergent vegetation takes over. The rooted vegetation traps sediment, which decreases the depth even more. Hypothesis 4 can be proved by looking at graph 4. From the trend line the number of emergent plants increases slowly with distance around the pond. This is because the emergent vegetation of the common club rush and pampus grass have established themselves more as the depth decreases. The marshland sere however has not yet fully developed and therefore didnt impact much on the graph. This should be the case as the water depth decreases further still by the decay of emergent plants but the minimum depth of 20 cm is still probably too high for marshland scrubs. Hypothesis 2 predicted more vegetation as one goes around the pond, this cant be seen from the graph of total percentage plant cover (graph 5). The graph shows very high levels of percentage plant cover along the transect and no distinct increase or change. This doesnt support my hypothesis but its not to say the hypothesis is necessarily wrong. The hydrosere has developed from the single type of submergent plant . To a number of emergent plants and even a few marsh plants. To try to prove this I should have counted the number of different species at each point on the transect. So in summary: Depth and submergent plants decreases along the transect. Emergent plants increase along the transect. Total percentage cover of plants is high throughout. Evaluation: I thought the investigation was very successful as I was able to prove all but one of my hypotheses and thus I was able to build up a clear picture of the changing seres. The main aim of the investigation was achieved in that of showing a presents of succession at the pond. The only sere not yet developed was that of marshland but in years to come no doubt it will be clearly visible as the climax community is reached in the pond. The only extension to my project could be that of collecting more data, such as that of the total number of different plant species at each point and this would have enabled me to prove Hypothesis 2
